Genre: Supernatural Horror

IMDb synopsis:

Be captured by the Invisible. To ease the weight of their college workload, unsuspecting teenagers seize the opportunity to to turn their end-of-the-summer party into a sick house wrecking. What happens instead they will never forget. In a classic tale of one girl learning to break free of the past, Almost Invisible has captured the attention of Washington DC Mid-Atlantic teenagers and aspiring filmmakers alike. Seamless special effects, a haunting original soundtrack. Almost Invisible. It’s almost here.

Okay, so I watched this movie a while back and to be honest, I could not make heads nor tails of it. Even after a couple of viewings it was difficult to follow – and I had to go to the IMDb where somebody had posted a spoiler blow – by – blow account of what the movie was about.

The camera work. Dear God. Either the director or the camera operator (or both) appeared to have a fetish for shooting women’s midriffs and butts. I love looking at the female form as much as the next person, but it was so overblown in the movie that it actually heavily interfered with the storytelling. Also the lighting was not so much atmospheric as it was dark or sepia tinted to the point of being irritating and/or boring.

The synopsis above talked about seamless special effects. I have to call shenanigans on this. Most of the effects came in the form of cut out 2D objects floating around the screen, not looking like they had any reality with the rest of the scene presented.

But, to be fair I will give credit where credit is due. There are a few stand out visual effects. One is that there is a swarm of CGI flies that attack from room to room. Another is one of the characters tries to break a sliding door window – and his arm gets stuck half-way through it and the glass seals around the arm. The last effect was a simple one, but still very effective. A couple in a car try to break down the garage door, only to have the door disappear and they crash into the interior of the garage.

Also, the actors were not bad. They really gave it the ol’ college try, but they simply were not given anything useful to work with. I mean, the main story is what the synopsis talks about; a bunch of college/high school party-ers end up at a Goth girl’s mansion and basically trash it. She get’s pissed and traps everyone in the house via supernatural elements, and the bodies start to pile up. That sounds like a pretty cool premise – right? Unfortunately this is not really made clear throughout the movie’s running time. It comes across very confusing. There is no real direction going on with the storytelling and the film almost feels improvised.

I happen to be on friendly terms with one of the leads – Sara Cole (the Goth chick). The fact that I am not pulling my punches in this review shows I am not about playing favorites. I CAN say she is a fine actress and if you would like to watch her in a good horror movie – go buy DEAD HUNT.

As this was a screener I do not know if this DVD comes with any extras. This is not the worse movie I have reviewed on the site – that recognition goes to NIGHTMARE ALLEY. There are those that will be curious enough to buy it, so the link for that is HERE.

This kind of concludes the last of the movies that I will review without prescreening to see whether or not I want to even bother reviewing it. Chemical Burn Entertainment does have some great movies that it distributes. This is not one of them.

My Next Chemical Burn movie will be MUCKMAN (which I loved).
